A New Methoodology for Screen Evaluation

Nowdays, a patent of “An integrated experimental apparatus for screen charateristic test and its evaluation method” is been identified. And the corresponding research article has been published on Journal of China University of Petroleum (Natural Science Edition).

Mechanical screen is the key component of the downhole sand control completion equipment in unconsolidated sandstone gas reservoir and its type and comprehensive characteristics determines the sand retention effect, well productivity and service life. Dongfang 1-1 gas filed is typical sandstone formation and faces serve sanding problem during production. In order to select proper screen type and optimize sand retention accuracy for Dongfang 1-1 gas filed, the concepts of screen conductivity, sand retention ability and the corresponding evaluation index are put forward to describe screen comprehensive sand control characteristic. Using the self-developed experimental installation, with the formation sand and production parameters similar to the gas reservoir, a series of screen performance evaluation experiments were performed to six types screen samples of single-layer mesh compound screen, two-layer mesh compound screen, slotted linear screen, wire-wrapped compound screen, multi-layer mesh screen and star-hole metal cotton screen. And then, from the test data, the performance index are calculated to compare the comprehensive characteristics of the six types of screens. The results indicates that, for fine sand of Dongfang 1-1 gas reservoir with no water production, two-layer mesh compound screen and multi-layer mesh screen presents excellent performance of sand retention,  flow deliverability and anti-plugging, which are recommended as the optimum sand control screens for Dongfang 1-1 gas field. To optimize the sand retention accuracy, two-layer mesh compound screens with six different sand retention accuracy of 0.1-0.15mm were used to perform another series of experiments with simulated formation sand with median size of 0.08mm. The experiment result show that the optimum sand retention accuracy would be 0.1-0.115mm for Dongfang 1-1 gas field.
